Growing up in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Neil never imagined that his home was a living museum, nor the richness of it's surroundings. He played on relics, and ran past them, daily - just like the other local kids. But, when the family moved to Canada in the '70's it was hard not to feel that something was absent.

Neil longed for the patina of England and it profoundly affected him. He spent summers exploring the old buildings around Oakville harbour. There he realized a great love for things from the past. Later, while delivering newspapers to historic homes, Neil took every opportunity to examine millwork & furnishings in Ontario's the finer residences.

Neil's Granddad Gower had set aside the old joiner's tools, and Neil found a new hobby in this gift. Other kids were fastening simple night stands while Neil was recreating Hepplewhite pieces, matching exotic veneers, and hand paring dovetail pins - All under the supervision of a European master!

As a young man Neil honed this craft in one of Ontario's finest restoration shops. He fell in love with French polishing and developed a passion for age-old techniques. Personal care and strong attention to detail gave him a desire to enter his own business and in 1996 he opened Neil Herbert Fine Woodworking.

Today, pursuing his life's work, Neil Herbert is a master woodworker and a museum quality restoration specialist. Using traditional techniques and correct materials, Neil and company lovingly restore, repair, and French polish fine woodwork. Neil has a personal hand in every piece.

Neil's client list reads like the "Who's - Who" of the Toronto's “Arts & Design” community.
